Case Study: Improving Chronic Bloating, Diarrhea, and Digestive Symptoms
The Starting Point
A 36-year-old male came to Executive Functional Healing after dealing with persistent digestive symptoms for approximately three to four years.
His main concerns included bloating after nearly every meal, frequent diarrhea, stomach aches, low energy, and brain fog. Before this period, he had no significant history of gut problems or abdominal surgeries.
By the time we began working together, these symptoms had become a regular part of daily life and were affecting how he felt after meals and throughout the day.
What We Looked At
Because the symptoms had been ongoing for several years, we looked beyond the symptoms themselves and evaluated the broader gut picture.
Testing supported the presence of SIBO, which involves excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine. His stool and microbiome testing also showed significant microbial imbalances, including several beneficial microbes that were very low or absent.
These findings helped provide additional context for why his digestive symptoms had become so persistent and why simply addressing one symptom at a time was unlikely to be enough.
The Approach
One of the biggest areas we addressed was diet.
His previous diet included a high amount of processed foods and added sugar. Over time, we worked on shifting him toward a more nutrient-dense, whole-food approach designed to better support digestive health.
The transition was not easy at first. Changing long-standing eating habits took time, consistency, and adjustment. Rather than expecting perfection, the goal was to create changes he could realistically maintain.
We also worked on stress management and sleep. These areas can influence digestion, energy, appetite, recovery, and how the body responds to ongoing stress.
The overall goal was not to chase one symptom at a time, but to look at the larger picture and support multiple areas that could be contributing to how he felt.
What Changed
Over approximately six months, he reported significant improvement in several areas.
His bloating decreased substantially. His diarrhea improved. His stomach aches became far less frequent.
He also reported better energy and no longer experiencing the same level of brain fog he had before.
Most importantly, he said he felt noticeably better overall and was able to eat without experiencing the same degree of digestive discomfort after nearly every meal.
What This Case Shows
This case highlights why persistent digestive symptoms may require a broader look than simply managing bloating, diarrhea, or stomach discomfort individually.
Testing helped uncover evidence of SIBO and significant microbiome imbalance, while his diet, stress levels, sleep, and overall health history provided additional context.
The goal was not to focus on one isolated symptom, but to better understand the patterns contributing to the bigger digestive picture and make changes that were realistic and sustainable over time.
Important Context
This case represents one individual experience and does not guarantee similar results for others.
Digestive symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and brain fog can have many possible causes. Testing and recommendations should always be individualized based on a person's symptoms, history, and overall health picture.
